What happens when AI becomes the first confidant in a mental health crisis?
The number of children and young people attending A&E units in England for mental health crises rose by 36% between 2019 and 2025. The rise was steepest among very young children aged six to nine, with some facing waits of more than 12 hours. A doctors' group said A&Es are not the best place for these children but a lack of community support leaves few alternatives.
