The reason is brutally simple economics: for the first time in history, producing convincing-looking content costs essentially nothing. When making a thousand plausible articles is free, someone makes a million. The open web is being flooded with machine-made filler faster than any human, or any filter, can sort it — and the tide is still coming in.
The noise floor is rising
Every signal has a noise floor — the background hiss beneath which you can't hear anything real. The web always had some. Now it's rising fast.
What makes AI slop different from old-fashioned spam is that it's good enough. Spam was obvious; you could smell it. Slop is fluent. It's grammatical, structured, on-topic, and confident, which means your instinct for "this is junk" — an instinct trained on clumsy spam — no longer fires. The filler now wears the same clothes as the real thing. You can't cheaply tell them apart by reading, which is exactly the property that makes it dangerous.
And it multiplies. Because slop is engineered to be found — chunked, keyworded, formatted for whatever ranks it — it doesn't sit quietly in a corner. It floods to the top, crowds out the grounded stuff, and becomes the default answer to your question. The signal isn't gone. It's just underneath a rising floor of confident nothing.
Why this is a decision problem, not a reading problem
Here's the part that should actually worry you, and it's not the wasted time.
Everything you read is raw material. The articles you skim, the summaries you trust, the "research" you skim before a call — that's the input stock your judgment is built from. A grounded claim can show its sources, its reasoning, the path from assertion to evidence. Slop can't — its defining feature is that it has no root, and provenance is precisely the test it cannot survive. So you stop trusting tone and start demanding the trail.
